I took a moment today to step back and reflect on the past 14 months since I dove in and decided to make The Olivine Design Studio, LLC a thing. That thing is more like an 18-legged being with 57 irons in the fire.
The phrase 'I've never worked harder' sounds so lame. Baby, I've never hustled harder. That's more like it. Hustle sounds like a dated word, but it's defined this journey. No, this expedition. Some days I feel like I could blaze the Oregon Trail in my covered wagon. Wagon fires do still happen though, more often than not. It's a feeling of exhilaration and exhaustion that I can't quite describe. I often feel like I could implode due to excitement and puke at the same time. Do you know this feeling? When it comes over me, it typically means it's-go-time because there's a killer idea brewing. This is creative business ownership. This is called sticking my neck out there and taking a huge chance, even if it means getting clothes-lined. This has to happen daily in order for me to grow as a person and as a business.
It was a year of challenging, patience-testing, and sometimes dripping-in-sweat or freezing-my-tail-off work. It was a year of trial and error, risk and payoff, and above all, trusting in the greater plan. It was a year of diving into the reality of numbers and income and expense forms. Guys, I went to art school and I don't do numbers. But in 2015 I did. It involved making new connections, cutting off unnecessary ones, taking new steps, shifting my direction, getting rid of junk, shaking hands with other small business owners (and giant ones), re-definining what this thing is that I do, learning to say no, simplifying, and finding joy in the chaos. All in all, it feels good.
2015 included the design of three new home-goods and apparel lines, dozens of new logos, refreshing environments, and historic holiday windows. An Olivine pop-up shop was set up at 12 Troy Farmers Markets, 1 Oktoberfest, 1 Sweet Corn Festival, 1 Troy Streets Alive event, 1 private event, and 1 holiday sale.
I'm grateful for those of you who encouraged me on this journey and reeled me in when I was cluelessly in over my head. Thank you. And to my haters.. your harsh words made me hustle harder and win more projects. Thanks, but don't waste so much time writing me next time. Spend it doing something positive. Dive into your own thing, and do it well.
I'm proud/happy/elated/pumped-up/jacked-up to say that as of December 1, 2015, running The Olivine Design Studio became my full-time job. It was a smooth transition of working with previous employers and new ones (locally and world-wide) to make this wild dream a full-time reality. This is happening and I'm doing it!
Merry Christmas to you and yours from The Olivine Design Studio! 2016 is already looking to be a full, fun one! Thanks for joining me on the adventure. The biggest cheers!
